YOUNG WOMEN RISE DONATES CLOTHES TO GIRLS WITH DISABILITIES IN BALAKA

Young Women Rise on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 conducted an awareness and outreach campaign at Ulongwe in Traditional Authority Kalembo, Balaka District, aimed at promoting inclusive education and support for children with disabilities.

During the event, the Officer In-Charge for Balaka Police Station, Mr. Kelvin Maigwa (ACP), urged parents and guardians not to keep children with disabilities hidden at home, but instead ensure they access education and equal opportunities.

Mr. Maigwa further encouraged children with disabilities not to allow their physical challenges to limit their dreams and ambitions, emphasizing the importance of hard work, confidence, and determination.

Speaking in an interview, Young Women Rise Executive Director, Miliam Chilemba, said the initiative seeks to encourage parents to enrol children with disabilities in school so they can access quality and inclusive education.

“As an organisation, we believe every child deserves access to education, care, and equal opportunities regardless of their disability,” said Chilemba.

As part of the outreach activity, Young Women Rise donated clothes to vulnerable girls with different disabilities in the community. The donation was made with support from Little Dress for Africa, a UK-based organisation that produces clothes for vulnerable children across Africa.

Young Women Rise is targeting to reach 1,200 girls with disabilities across Balaka District through the initiative as part of its commitment to promoting inclusion, dignity, and empowerment for vulnerable children and communities.
